United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, a graduate of Yale Law School and appointed by President Obama, became the first Latina and the third woman to serve on the Court.
Sotomayor that born into a Puerto Rican family who had emigrated during World War II. She grew up in Bronx public housing. Her father was a factory worker with a third-grade education. Sotomayor writes, “I do know one thing about me. I do not measure myself by others’ expectations or let others define my worth. It is important for all of us to appreciate where we come from and how that history has really shaped us in ways that we might not understand.”
She declares, “The Latina in me is an ember that blazes forever.”
