Our culture encourages individualism – the great American myth that we can all “pull ourselves up by our bootstraps” lives on. Even within Unitarian Universalism, we tend to think of ourselves as on an individual spiritual journey seeking our own answers. The message “I Need You to Survive” is thus very countercultural for us, and perhaps even off-putting. It might even sound “weak” or “dependent.” And yet, we do. Now more than ever, we need to be able to rely on each other, to know and fully embrace the interdependent web of existence of which we are all a part.
