The Reverend Thomas Bayes came from a prominent Protestant family in the 18th century to develop a way of thinking about evidence and uncertainty. Through his work, the framework for updating one’s beliefs in the face of evidence was introduced. Centuries later, this framework is still used to quantify findings from studies in neuroimaging to climate science. We can turn this framework toward the understanding of spirituality and religion to gain a greater understanding of how so many people can live in the same countries, cities, towns, and even houses, and yet come to different conclusions in the light of similar experiences. By showing how rational individuals weigh evidence differently, we can gain empathy for a diverse set of beliefs.
