The Spiritual Duality of Ephemerality and Permanence: From Winchester to Rome and from Dante to the (Grateful) Dead

The kindred spiritual dualities of ephemerality and permanence, of light and darkness, of life and death, of mortality and immortality, of the earth and the heavens have been a constant thread woven through the tapestries of spiritual beliefs of many cultures across many thousands of years. The symbolism of these dualities help us to begin to ponder the unknowable mysteries of this life, and whatever may lay beyond. Join us as we begin to tug at this thread, and take note of just a few of the many places it is manifest, from the Gothic Cathedrals of northern France, to the great poems of Dante, to the songs of the Grateful Dead. – Matthew Bronski
