On Earth Day (Sunday, April 22) from 4:00-6:00 pm, there will be a free showing of the revealing 2014 documentary “Merchants of Doubt.” The film shows how the campaign to delay governmental action to regulate “greenhouse gases” use public relations tactics developed by the tobacco industry.  A key tobacco industry strategy was to undermine public and political acceptance of the scientific evidence that smoking caused serious health risks. And the tactics used to create doubt are revealed to be similar to those of magicians distracting their audiences.  Viewers will emerge better able to resist professionalized deception, especially by pundits-for-hire who present themselves as scientific authorities. After this highly entertaining 90-minute film, there will be a brief discussion and an opportunity to chat with members of several local civic groups working on local, state, and national environmental initiatives. The event’s sponsors include CoolWinchester, The Winchester League of Women Voters, 350-MetroNorth, Sustainable Winchester, Boston MetroWest Citizen’s Climate Lobby, and the WUS Green Sanctuary Team.

The film will be shown in the sanctuary of the Winchester Unitarian Society (WUS), corner of Main St. and Mystic Valley Parkway, Winchester. Accessible entrance on 478 Main St.
